With the Paris 2024 Olympics on the horizon (set to begin on July 26), today we focus on one of track and field’s most demanding and fascinating events.
We’re talking about the decathlon, which, spanning ten different events over the course of two days, represents the pinnacle of versatility.
This specialty tests athletes’ athletic abilities and endurance and serves as a stage for global sporting excellence.
History of the Decathlon
As is often the case when discussing sports, to trace its origins, we must go back to ancient Greece.
The decathlon, in fact, originated from the pentathlon, an Olympic discipline since 708 BC, consisting of long jump, discus throw, javelin throw, sprint, and Greek wrestling.
The modern decathlon, introduced in 1912 at the Stockholm Olympics, was the last specialty to become part of the official athletics program.
Currently, the events are divided as follows:
- 1st day · 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters.
- 2nd day · 110 meters hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 1500 meters.
A Varied Training
In the decathlon, every discipline demands tailored training, precise technique, strength, and a balance of power and control.
Targeted and differentiated workouts, tailored to individual needs, are key to building a strong, flexible, and resilient body.
However, physical training is not the only fundamental pillar.
Balanced technical preparation, in fact, is just as useful for improving coordination, precision, and fluidity of movements.
Recovery, the Goal Between Races
But success in the decathlon also depends on excellent synergy between nutrition, rest, and mental well-being.
A balanced diet, supporting intense energy demands, provides the body with the necessary fuel to sustain effort and recover quickly.
Rest, on the other hand, allows muscles to regenerate and the mind to recharge.
Finally, mental strength is crucial for facing pressure and tension and managing emotions during races.
Technology, a Valuable Ally
In the modern era of decathlon, technology plays a central role.
Motion sensors monitor posture and athletic gesture efficiency, while tracking software analyzes detailed data on technique.
Combined with video analysis and support from their own team, these tools identify areas for improvement, optimize preparation, and prevent injuries.
The Decathlon at Paris 2024
There are 47 athletics medals to be awarded at the upcoming Olympics, including 23 men’s, 23 women’s, and one mixed event.
Athletics competitions will take place from August 1 to 11 at the Stade de France, except for race walking, which will be held at the Pont d’Iéna, and the marathon, starting from the Hôtel de Ville.
Specifically, athletes will compete in the decathlon events on August 2 and 3; Canadian Damian Warner clinched the gold at Tokyo 2020.
