That music has a significant impact on our lives is a given.
We listen to it to relax, motivate, concentrate, or simply escape from daily routine.
But did you know it can also have a disruptive effect on athletes’ performance and mood?
Psychological Foundations of Music in Sports
There are several psychological theories aimed at explaining the influence of music on sports.
Among the most notable are arousal theory, dissociation theory, and association theory.
Arousal Theory
Music can increase or decrease arousal, that is, the state of physiological and psychological activation, energizing athletes when they feel tired or calming them when anxious.
Fast and intense rhythms, in fact, increase heart rate and blood pressure, preparing the body for action.
Conversely, slow and relaxing melodies reduce stress and promote concentration.
Dissociation Theory
Another interesting theory is that of dissociation.
Music can distract athletes from feelings of fatigue and pain, allowing them to better focus on the task at hand.
In long-distance running or endurance sports, for example, songs with moderate or lyrical tempos help maintain a steady pace, diverting attention from physical effort.
Association Theory
Finally, it has the innate ability to evoke emotions and memories which, in turn, can influence athletic performance.
An athlete might associate a song with a positive moment in their career.
Listening to it before a race could stimulate their confidence and motivation.
Music as a Psychological Lever
Music is a powerful tool, a valuable ally that improves the mood and performance of athletes.
Psychological theories provide guidance on how to effectively leverage it, helping us understand the mechanisms behind this phenomenon.
Its conscious use, in fact, can be a determining factor for sporting success and truly make a difference.
